How to Pack a Winter Coat in a Carry-On (or Skip Packing It)
The easiest way to bring a winter coat on a carry-on-only trip is to wear it or carry it on: United and Delta both list a coat as a free extra item. How security handles it, and how to pack one when you must.

The short answer
The simplest way to bring a winter coat on a carry-on-only trip is not to pack it at all: wear it through the airport or carry it over your arm. United and Delta both list a jacket or coat as an item you can bring in addition to your carry-on bag and personal item (United; Delta). If you have to pack it, roll or compress it and put it in the main carry-on, not the personal item, which has the smaller size limit.

Your three options
| Option | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Wear it | Bulky parkas, any airline that exempts coats | Warm in the terminal; must come off at standard screening |
| Carry it over your arm | Changing planes, warm departure airport | One more thing to hold |
| Pack it in the carry-on | A coat you won't need until arrival, or a packable down jacket | Takes a big share of a 9 x 14 x 22 inch bag |
Wearing or carrying it: what the airlines say
United's carry-on page says small purses or bags are not allowed in addition to your personal item and carry-on, but lists a few items you can bring for free, starting with a jacket or coat (United). Delta lists "a jacket and/or umbrella" among items that are free to carry on in addition to your usual carry-on items (Delta).
United's free-items list sits on the same page as its Basic Economy rule, which allows only one personal item on most routes. If you are flying a restrictive fare on any airline, wearing the coat is the safest way to avoid a debate at the gate. Not every airline publishes a coat exemption, so check your carrier's carry-on page before you go.
At the security checkpoint
| Screening lane | What happens to your coat |
|---|---|
| Standard screening | TSA says standard screening requires that you remove all items and place them on the X-ray belt. For body scanners, light outer garments and bulky clothing are removed. |
| TSA PreCheck | You don't need to remove light jackets, along with shoes, laptops, liquids and belts. |
TSA defines a light outer garment as an outer layer with a full front zipper or buttons, such as windbreakers, vests, suit coats, blazers and light jackets (TSA). A heavy winter coat goes in a bin in standard screening. TSA also notes that no traveler is guaranteed expedited screening, so be ready to take it off even with PreCheck.
To make the bin quicker, empty the coat's pockets into your carry-on before you reach the line. Our checklist of documents a child needs to fly covers the PreCheck rules for families.
If you have to pack it: step by step
- Measure your bag first. United's carry-on limit is 9 x 14 x 22 inches including handles and wheels, and the personal item limit is 9 x 10 x 17 inches (United). A coat almost always belongs in the larger bag.
- Empty the pockets and close every zipper and snap so nothing snags.
- Lay it flat, face down, with the sleeves folded across the back.
- Fold in the sides so it is about as wide as your bag.
- Roll it tightly from the hood or collar down. Rolling pushes air out of insulated coats.
- Use a compression or packing cube if you have one, or the coat's own stuff sack if it came with one.
- Pack it last, on top, so you can pull it out the moment you land.
Ways to save space
- Wear the bulkiest layer. Put the coat on and pack the lighter layers.
- Pick a packable coat. Many down and synthetic jackets are designed to stuff into a pocket or sack; check the maker's tag or website.
- Layer instead of one huge coat if your destination allows it: a light insulated jacket under a shell can pack smaller than a parka.
- Plan for arrival. If you land somewhere cold, keep the coat where you can reach it before you leave the plane.
Questions readers ask
Does a coat count as a carry-on?
On United and Delta, no. Both list a jacket or coat as an item you can bring in addition to your carry-on and personal item. Check your airline's page, since not every carrier publishes the same list.
Do I have to take my coat off at TSA?
In standard screening, yes; TSA says standard screening requires removing items for the X-ray belt, and light outer garments are removed for body scanners. TSA PreCheck travelers can usually keep light jackets on, though expedited screening is never guaranteed.
Can I wear my coat in Basic Economy?
United's Basic Economy allows only one personal item on most routes, but its free-items list, which includes a jacket or coat, applies separately. Wearing it on board is the simplest approach.
Should I check a bag just for my coat?
Usually not. Carrying or wearing it costs nothing on airlines that exempt coats, while a checked bag can carry a fee.
