How Long Does It Take to Read a 300-Page Book? The Math, With Real Reading Speeds

Most adults need about 5 to 6.5 hours to read a 300-page book, based on a 2019 meta-analysis of reading speed. Tables by page density and speed, plus how long it takes at 15, 30 or 60 minutes a day.

Bar chart of reading time for a 300-page book at 250, 300 and 350 words per page, for non-fiction at 238 and fiction at 260 words per minute

The short answer

Most adults need about 5 to 6.5 hours to read a typical 300-page book. That comes from two numbers: average adult reading speed, which a 2019 review of 190 studies put at 238 words per minute for non-fiction and 260 for fiction, and the number of words on a page, which is often around 300 but varies a lot by edition. Read 30 minutes a day and you will finish in about 11 to 13 days.

The two numbers behind the answer

Reading speed. Psychologist Marc Brysbaert's 2019 meta-analysis in the Journal of Memory and Language pooled 190 studies with 18,573 participants. He found:

Reader and text Average speed Typical adult range
Silent reading, non-fiction 238 words per minute 175 to 300 wpm
Silent reading, fiction 260 words per minute 200 to 320 wpm
Reading aloud 183 words per minute not given

The paper says these averages are lower than the figures often quoted, and that rates are lower for children, older adults and people reading in a second language.

Words per page. No standard exists. Trim size, font and margins change it. We use 250, 300 and 350 words per page below, which covers spacious through dense paperbacks. You can count your own book in a minute (see the test at the end).

How long 300 pages takes

Our arithmetic, using Brysbaert's averages:

Page density Words in 300 pages Non-fiction (238 wpm) Fiction (260 wpm)
Spacious, 250 words/page 75,000 5 h 15 min 4 h 48 min
Typical, 300 words/page 90,000 6 h 18 min 5 h 46 min
Dense, 350 words/page 105,000 7 h 21 min 6 h 44 min

And for the same 90,000-word book across the normal range of adult readers:

Reader Speed Time for 90,000 words
Slower end, non-fiction 175 wpm 8 h 34 min
Slower end, fiction 200 wpm 7 h 30 min
Faster end, non-fiction 300 wpm 5 h 00 min
Faster end, fiction 320 wpm 4 h 41 min

How many days, at the time you actually have

Most people read in short sessions. For a typical 300-page book (90,000 words):

Daily reading Fiction at 260 wpm (346 min total) Non-fiction at 238 wpm (378 min total)
15 minutes about 23 days about 25 days
30 minutes about 12 days about 13 days
60 minutes about 6 days about 6 to 7 days

So a book a month takes about 15 minutes a day, and a book every two weeks takes about 30. Those are reading minutes, not minutes with the book open.

A 5-minute test for your own speed

  1. Pick the book you plan to read and open to a full page of text.
  2. Count the words in three full lines and divide by 3 to get words per line. Count the lines on the page. Multiply them: that is your words per page.
  3. Set a timer for 5 minutes and read normally, not racing.
  4. Count the pages you read (use fractions for a partial page), multiply by words per page, and divide by 5. That is your words per minute.
  5. Total time in minutes = (pages x words per page) ÷ your words per minute.

Example: 11 words per line x 30 lines = 330 words per page. If you read 4 pages in 5 minutes, that is 1,320 words ÷ 5 = 264 wpm, right around the fiction average. A 300-page book of that density is 99,000 words, or about 375 minutes (6 h 15 min).

Why speed-reading claims don't hold up

Brysbaert's review found that average rates line up with the maximum speed at which people can follow speech, and that there is no evidence for separate "reading gears" beyond the difference between reading and scanning. If a method promises to triple your speed with full understanding, the research does not back it. Reading more often is the reliable way to finish more books.

Questions readers ask

How many pages can I read in an hour?

At 260 words per minute, the average for fiction in Brysbaert's 2019 meta-analysis, you read about 15,600 words an hour. On a page of 300 words that is about 52 pages; on a dense 350-word page, about 45.

Is 250 words per minute average?

Close. The 2019 meta-analysis of 190 studies put average adult silent reading at 238 words per minute for non-fiction and 260 for fiction, and found that older, higher figures were overestimates.

How long would a 300-page book take at 20 minutes a day?

For a typical novel of about 90,000 words read at 260 words per minute, about 346 minutes in total, or roughly 17 to 18 days at 20 minutes a day.

Why does non-fiction feel slower?

Brysbaert found that the gap between non-fiction and fiction speed is predicted by word length: non-fiction uses longer words.
