The short answer

A PCS first-night box is the one box the movers never touch. It rides in your car and holds what you need to sleep, wash, eat and clean in an empty house: toilet paper, paper towels, hand soap, cleaning supplies, a broom and mop, snacks and drinks, paper plates, diapers if you need them, plus a bag with sheets, towels and an air mattress. Pack it for two or three days, not one night. Military OneSource tells families to plan for an extra day or two without their things, even on a door-to-door delivery, because delays happen, especially in summer (Military PCS Move Management).

The military version of this box differs from a civilian one in three ways. The movers will not ship most of your cleaning supplies, the furniture hardware can get separated from the furniture, and on an overseas move the box becomes a shipment of its own.

Why the box needs to cover more than one night

Your household goods arrive on the moving company's schedule, not yours. Military OneSource's Personal Property FAQs spell out how delivery works:

  • The mover must give you 24 hours' notice before delivery and will try to reach you twice, at least six hours apart.
  • If they cannot reach you, they may ask the transportation office to put your shipment into storage.
  • If the truck reaches your new home before you do, it will most likely go into storage, because the crew has to get to its next job.
  • Once your things are in storage, it can take up to a few weeks to get them delivered again.
  • Pickup and delivery must start between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. and be finished by 9 p.m.

Military OneSource recommends arriving a day or more before your scheduled delivery date. That gap, plus any slip in the truck's schedule, is the time your box has to carry you through.

The PCS first-night box checklist

Military OneSource's list is short on purpose. Here it is with the gaps filled in, grouped so you can pack it in two bins and a duffel.

Category Pack this Why it matters
Bathroom Toilet paper, hand soap, a towel per person, toothbrushes and toiletries, a shower curtain and rings The bathroom is the first room you need, and a shower curtain is the item spouses most often forget
Cleaning Cleaners, paper towels, a toilet brush, a broom, a mop, trash bags, rubber gloves Most cleaning supplies cannot ride on the truck, and you will want to clean before the furniture lands
Sleeping Sheets, pillows, blankets and an air mattress with its pump You may sleep in the house before your beds arrive
Kitchen Paper plates, cups, plastic utensils, a can opener, one pan, a sharp knife, dish soap, coffee supplies Enough for simple meals without unpacking the kitchen
Food Drinks, snacks, breakfast food, a few easy meals The first trip to the commissary may not happen on day one
Kids and pets Diapers and wipes, a favorite toy or blanket, pet food, bowls, leash and litter A familiar thing at bedtime matters more than anything else in the box
Tools The furniture parts box, box cutter or scissors, a screwdriver, hex keys, tape, a marker You will open boxes and rebuild beds the moment the truck leaves
Power and health Prescription medications, basics like aspirin, a first-aid kit, phones and chargers, a power strip Medications and chargers are the two things you cannot be without

The bathroom, cleaning and sleeping rows come straight from Military OneSource. The kitchen items reflect a military spouse's tested open-first box list on Military.com, which includes a shower curtain, can opener and coffee supplies among its essentials.

Why cleaning supplies belong in your car

This is the detail most first-night box lists miss. On a government household goods move, there are restrictions on hazardous materials, which Military OneSource says include most cleaning supplies, paint and gasoline. Perishables such as frozen food and produce cannot travel with your goods either, and a lawn mower has to be drained of fuel before the movers will pack it.

So the bleach, spray cleaner and dish soap you use the morning of pack-out cannot go in a moving box. Put the bottles you want to keep in your first-night box with the caps taped shut, use up or give away the rest, and carry the box in the car. You will need them twice: once to clean the old house for inspection and again before the furniture arrives at the new one.

Keep the parts box with you

When movers take apart beds, cribs, desks and TV mounts, they collect the screws, bolts and brackets in what Military OneSource calls the parts box. Its advice is to take that box with you if possible, because there have been limited incidents of it going missing, and without the hardware you cannot put the beds back together.

Ask the crew lead for the parts box at the end of loading day and put it in your trunk. Military OneSource also suggests bagging hardware in clear, resealable bags as furniture comes apart and taping bed hardware to the bed frame it came from. Add a set of hex keys to the box, since flat-pack furniture rarely comes back together without one.

Stop the packers from packing the box

Packers move fast and box almost everything they can reach. Military OneSource's fix is a "Do Not Pack" area: a closet, a spare room or your vehicle, with a sign on it, and a word to both the packers and your family that nothing there gets boxed. Put the first-night box, your luggage, your car keys and wallet, and your document binder in that space before the crew arrives. Prescription medications should come out of the medicine cabinet early and go into a small clear bag that you carry yourself.

The binder is not the box

Paperwork travels separately, in a binder you hand-carry. Military OneSource's PCS planning guide lists what goes in it:

  • Your original orders, which should stay with you at all times, plus several copies
  • Military IDs, driver's licenses, Social Security cards and passports for each family member, and birth, marriage and naturalization certificates
  • Vehicle title or lease, registration, inspection and insurance papers
  • The household inventory list your moving company provided, and lease or mortgage paperwork
  • Wills, powers of attorney, custody or adoption papers
  • School transcripts, report cards and any IEP, plus medical, dental and vaccination records

Keep the binder in the front seat, not in the box. The box can get dusty and opened in a hurry; the binder needs to stay organized.

Overseas moves: the box becomes unaccompanied baggage

Military OneSource frames the car box for a stateside PCS when you have your vehicle with you. If you are moving overseas, you will probably land with suitcases and nothing else, so the first-night box turns into unaccompanied baggage, or UB.

UB is part of your weight allowance that ships separately by a faster method so it arrives soon after you do, ahead of the main household goods. The FAQs list what fits:

  • Personal clothing
  • Essential pots, pans and light housekeeping items
  • Collapsible items such as cribs, playpens and strollers
  • Other articles needed to care for dependents

Furniture and major appliances are not allowed in UB, and everything in it counts against your total weight allowance. Even with UB, expect a stretch with very little.

That is where loan closets help. Military OneSource notes that Military and Family Support Centers may offer loan closets. At Naval Air Station Patuxent River, for example, the Loan Locker lends household items such as a coffee maker, microwave, cot, sleeping pad, folding chairs, Pack 'n Play and high chair, at no cost with PCS orders, for up to 90 days. What is on the shelf varies by installation, so call ahead. If you need to send yourself a few small things by mail before you arrive, our guide on how to ship a care package to an APO address walks through the customs form and the restrictions for each APO ZIP code.

Use the box before delivery day

Your box also covers the work you do before the truck pulls up. Military OneSource suggests three jobs:

  1. Photograph the empty house. It is easier to document existing damage to walls, floors and carpet before the boxes come in.
  2. Clean the bathroom and kitchen. This is what the cleaners, mop and paper towels are for. Do it before the crew arrives so you are not cleaning around stacks of boxes.
  3. Decide where the furniture goes. Movers are only responsible for placing each item once, so know where the couch and beds should go before unloading starts.

If the truck is late, keep your receipts

If the moving company misses your required delivery date, you can file an inconvenience claim with it. For shipments picked up on or after May 15, 2026, the FAQs say:

  • A baseline per diem is paid without receipts for the entire delay.
  • It is 100% of the local meals and incidental expenses rate for the service member and 75% for each dependent on the orders, for each day affected.
  • You get either that per diem or your actual out-of-pocket expenses, whichever is greater, not both.

Actual expenses can include air mattresses, pots, pans and dishes, paper goods, pillows, linens, towels and laundry service. Alcohol is not eligible. You have up to 12 months from delivery to file for shipments picked up on or after May 15, 2026. So if your two-day box stretches to two weeks, keep every receipt for what you buy to fill the gap, then compare the total to the per diem before you file.

Once you are settled, if your service member deploys from the new duty station, our deployment care package list covers what to send and what USPS will not take.

Questions readers ask

How long should a PCS first-night box last?

Pack for two or three days, not one night. Military OneSource advises planning for an extra day or two without your things even on a door-to-door delivery, because delays happen, especially in summer.

Can I put cleaning supplies in the moving truck?

Usually not. Military OneSource lists most cleaning supplies, paint and gasoline as hazardous materials that cannot travel with your household goods, so carry the cleaners you need for move-in day in your car.

What is the parts box?

It is the box where movers put the screws and bolts they remove when they take furniture apart. Military OneSource suggests taking it with you if you can, because it has occasionally gone missing, which makes setting up beds and cribs very hard.

What do I do for a first-night box on an overseas move?

You usually fly without a car full of supplies, so put essential pots and pans, light housekeeping items, clothes and collapsible baby gear in your unaccompanied baggage, and ask the Military and Family Support Center about its loan closet.

Can I get money back if the movers deliver late?

Often, yes. If the mover misses the required delivery date, you can file an inconvenience claim. For shipments picked up on or after May 15, 2026, a per diem is paid without receipts for the whole delay, or you can claim actual expenses such as air mattresses and dishes if that is more.
